The Australian’s Graham Lloyd says more attention should be paid to Chinese government owned social media giant WeChat which allows the communist government to exert influence on overseas Chinese.
Mr Lloyd said most WeChat users were members of the Chinese diaspora and warned the platform was highly regulated by the Chinese government.
Users are told what to watch, say, and how to communicate, and they risk expulsion from the platform should they fail to modify their behavior according to the company’s guidelines.
“It’s something that probably hasn’t had enough attention paid to it, the influence that this allows the communist party or authorities in China to exert on overseas communities, ” he said.
