Trudeau’s Empty Plastic Gesture

Iowa Climate Science Education

Bjorn Lomborg writes in the Globe and Mail about Canadian PM Justin Treudeau showing off by proposing to ban single-use plastics. Sorry, banning plastic bags won’t save our planet. Excerpts in italics with my bolds.

Last week, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced a plan to reduce plastic pollution, which will include a ban on single-use plastics as early as 2021. This is laudable: plastics clog drains and cause floods, litter nature and kill animals and birds.

Of course, plastic also makes our lives better in a myriad of ways. In just four decades, plastic packaging has become ubiquitous because it keeps everything from cereals to juice fresher and reduces transportation losses, while one-use plastics in the medical sector have made syringes, pill bottles and diagnostic equipment more safe.

Going without disposable plastic entirely would leave us worse off, so we need to tackle the problems without losing all of…

California lawmakers are turning cap-and-trade into the slush fund critics long feared

Iowa Climate Science Education

From the LA Times

For years, critics of California?s cap-and-trade program have lambasted it as a government slush fund. They say that politicians are able to dip into it to fund their pet projects or raid it to fill the shortfall of the moment ? as long as they can assert a mildly credible connection between the spending and the state?s ambitious goals to fight climate change.

Well, California lawmakers are about to prove those critics right.

They needed money but were too frightened politically to be honest about it.

As part of the budget negotiations, lawmakers shelved Gov. Gavin Newsom?s controversial ?water tax? that would have raised $140 million a year to help low-income communities finally clean up their contaminated water systems.

Who needs to get money when there?s this big pile over there.

Instead, lawmakers plan to fund the much-needed water cleanups with $100 million a year in…

by BOB IRVINE

With global population numbers due to stabilise in the next 50 years, the human geographical footprint should be our biggest environmental concern. I?m assuming here that every extra square meter of the earth humans need will result eventually in a square meter of natural habitat being compromised in some way.

There is a good discussion of Global Population Demographics at;

It is important that we look at global population demographics when discussing the big environmental issues. According to the UN, population in nearly all non-African countries will either be steady or shrinking by about 2050. Africa has a young population and will follow this trend sometime early in the 22nd century.

abseits vom mainstream - heplev

Manfred Gerstenfeld (direkt vom Autor)
